19 May 2024: Egilsstaðir to Höfn (Southeast Iceland)
We Took a Punt
To avoid driving back Egilsstaðir to use Highway 1, we took a short cut through the mountains. It turned out to be quite an adventure and we got a great close up view of the landscape.
The weather continued to be overcast and snowy. It was pretty miserable with poor visibility, so after lunch in Höfn we headed to our accomodation.

The Road to Djúpivogur

At first the road (shortcut) was sealed, but then we encountered this.

As compensation for the poor road we passed through some stunning landscape.

We started to get a bit concerned about where this was heading.

Was this the end?

Finally we got back on to Highway 1 along the coast.
Djúpivogur
Djúpivogur is a small village on the fjord Berufjörður.

This is the view from where we had a coffee (Costa Coffee House). In better weather I bet the background would have been stunning. 😀

The settlement also boasts a series of outdoor sculptures of 34 eggs by world-renowned artist Sigurður Guðmundsson titled Eggin í Gleðivík (The Eggs of Merry Bay). Completed in 2009.
Each egg sculpture represents a different bird species found in the area, capturing the local avian diversity. The sculptures vary in size, typically about 1-1.5 metres high, and are polished to a smooth finish.
Guðmundsson created these eggs to celebrate and honour the birdlife that is integral to the local environment.

I went out to have a closer look while Cathy stayed warm in the car.
On to Höfn
Again - lots of black basalt and flat plains.

The weather was getting worse and visibility was poor, so we just had lunch in Höfn (lobster soup and lobster sandwich) and headed for our accomodation.
Höfn í Hornafirði, commonly known as Höfn, is a fishing town in southeast Iceland with a population of 2,400. Its picturesque harbour forms the backbone of the settlement.
Sadly we couldn’t see it.
